Running your business as a tutor or educator often brings a strange mix of freedom and pressure. You might have chosen this path for flexibility, impact and the joy of teaching without restrictions or red tape. Those were certainly some of my reasons.
Sumantha:Yet even with that freedom, stress still finds its way in. Maybe you feel behind. Maybe your to do list never ends. Or maybe you are wondering whether you are doing it right. Today’s episode is based on all of this, and we are going to have a mindset reset.
Sumantha:I am sharing six things I remind myself and my clients when things feel noisy or overwhelming. These are not fluffy motivational quotes. If you know me, you know that is not my style. These are grounded truths that ease pressure without compromising your ambition or alignment.
Sumantha:So let us take a deep breath and dive in.
Sumantha:You do not need to dominate your market to be successful. It is easy to feel small in a saturated industry, especially when you see others everywhere. Instagram, YouTube, events, even the local paper.
Sumantha:But the reality is that you do not need a giant piece of the pie. You only need your slice. You only need the clients who are the right fit. The people you want to work with and make an impact on.
Sumantha:If you wanted to earn five thousand pounds a month, you might only need around twelve clients, or a certain number of group sessions depending on your offer. Out of hundreds or thousands of potential clients, that is only a tiny fraction.
Sumantha:Reminding yourself of this can be hugely liberating. You can stop chasing everyone else’s version of success. You can focus on being visible to the people who truly get what you offer. And you do not need to feel like you are running behind or that there is not enough room for you.
Sumantha:Remember that someone is looking up to you right now, whether you know it or not. It is so normal to look at others who seem more confident or further ahead and feel insecure.
Sumantha:You might wonder how someone else is doing X, Y or Z when you are more experienced. These thoughts appear when you compare yourself or when you are not fully confident in where you are.
Sumantha:But just like you look around and feel inspired by people further ahead, others are looking at you and feeling the same. They see you as confident. They see you as someone who is ahead.
Sumantha:This is not about ego. It is about perspective. You may not see yourself as a leader, but someone else already sees you as showing them what is possible.
Sumantha:This might be my favourite reminder. You can change your mind anytime. This mindset has been game changing for me. It removes fear from trying things out.
Sumantha:It has helped me with pricing. I do not have to fix a price forever. I can adjust it. It has helped me launch things even when I do not feel ready, because I know I can tweak or change them later.
Sumantha:I tell my clients the same. They often feel pressure when making decisions. I remind them that they can make the decision that feels right now and change it later.
Sumantha:There is no single track in business. You can shift your focus, drop an offer, raise your prices, change your marketing. You can do it as many times as you like.
Sumantha:One of the most stressful beliefs is thinking you must get something right the first time. But you are allowed to experiment and evolve. That is not failure. That is strength.
Sumantha:We all obsess over small things. The typo in a caption. The sound of a plane flying overhead. Colours not matching perfectly.
Sumantha:But the people listening to you or working with you are not grading you. They do not care as much about perfection as you think.
Sumantha:My clients have told me they appreciate when I leave small mistakes in the podcast. It feels human and relatable. It gives them permission to show up imperfectly too.
Sumantha:Quality matters, of course. I have invested in a good microphone. But I live on the Heathrow flight path. If I waited for silence, I would have to record at 1am.
Sumantha:So think about what your audience actually cares about. Chances are, they do not care about the tiny details you stress over.
Sumantha:You do need to be the best. But not the best overall. You only need to be the best for your clients.
Sumantha:Trying to be the absolute best is vague and exhausting. But being the best fit for your people is completely achievable.
Sumantha:If you specialise in neurodivergent learners or anxious teens, your tone and approach may make you the perfect solution. Even if someone else has more experience or a fancier website.
Sumantha:You do not need to compete with everyone. Define who you are the best for. That is where confidence grows.
Sumantha:I know I am not the best at everything. But I am the best for my clients because we are compatible, and I am always learning for them.
Sumantha:Now let us talk about the what ifs. When things do not go to plan, nothing terrible usually happens.
Sumantha:Tim Ferriss shares a great exercise about worst case scenarios. What if everything went wrong? How would you recover? Most of the time, recovery is entirely possible.
Sumantha:Trying something new brings fear. What if no one signs up? What if it flops? But most things are recoverable. At worst, you feel a bit bruised.
Sumantha:And often your biggest growth comes from something that did not work. You analyse why, and you improve.
Sumantha:Most things in your business carry far more to gain and very little to lose. Every new thing is a doorway that might lead somewhere unexpected but valuable.
Sumantha:Here is a quick summary of the six reminders.
Sumantha:You only need your slice of the pie.
Sumantha:Someone is looking up to you right now.
Sumantha:You can change your mind anytime.
Sumantha:Perfection is not required.
Sumantha:Be the best for your people.
Sumantha:Trying something new is not a risk. It is a doorway.
Sumantha:Which reminder stood out for you? These prompts reshape how you think and reduce unnecessary pressure.
Sumantha:You do not have to figure this out alone. My membership, my mastermind and my one to one programme go deep into these topics.
Sumantha:I also have free spaces, including my Facebook group. Visit www.upgradeyoureducationbusiness.com
